- @Inqilābī: That's because HTML doesn't use British spelling. ;-) But

It would be easier to do in a module. But to clarify, what additional features is this template meant to have over a manually written out list with

Such a distinction is actually fitting for Bengali because multiple spellings are equally common in literature (both contemporarily and historically): Bengali lacks some sounds, which are nevertheless represented in the alphabet since it uses the Sanskritic orthography; the needless letters being ঈ, ঊ, স, ষ, ং etc. Furthermore, ্ is not consistently employed to suppress a vowel sound. Learned borrowings from Sanskrit naturally use the original Sanskrit spelling, while the spelling of inherited words and semi-learned borrowings tend to be influenced by that of the Sanskrit prototype/etymon (albeit inconsistently). Likewise, adstrate words (from Persian, Perso-Arabic, English, etc.) are also (inconsistently) influenced by the etymon’s orthography. Since Bengali has had no spelling reform, several orthographic variants are used side by side; therefore, it would be better to group them together and highlight them in a table, so as to keep them apart from the genuine alternative forms. Orthographic variants would have no transliteration (
