use of this template

@Justinrleung, re: "it's obvious"? A bit lost on how whether Min has a separate section for a reading explicitly indicates that the character is being used as a stand-in or substitute for the spoken word (and may not be etymologically related to the spoken word)? DFTM and zh-min-nan.wikt uses 替 to explicitly indicate this. Why not do something similar here with this template? Hongthay (talk) 07:09, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

@Hongthay If it's in a separate etymology section, it's obvious that it's etymologically unrelated to the other etymologies. Now in terms of its use as a "substitute", I don't know if it's necessary. Many characters in other Chinese varieties (including Mandarin) are used for different etymologies that have nothing to do with the original meaning, e.g. 的 originally meant "bright; clear", but is borrowed for use as a particle; 我 originally referred to a weapon, but is borrowed for use as the 1st person pronoun. — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 07:18, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
