I think it is misleading to associate places that in many jurisdictions can't sell liquor with those that can. In all English-speaking countries that I know, the distinction is very significant. Pub as used in UK is a place licensed to sell alcoholic beverages to the public, with hours regulated. In the US the term refers to the UK institution. DCDuring TALK 11:18, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Also alcohol is the primary purpose of the establishment, unlike restaurants.
It may be that "pub" should not be a category-defining term or that it should have many fewer relatives, especially hyponyms. DCDuring TALK 11:25, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
