Firstly see WT:ANL which discusses this issue. And then I ask... how do you tell if something is masculine or feminine?

Not being a native speaker, I would typically use dictionary to tell if something is masculine or feminine in Dutch. Anyway - my bad. Thanks for pointing out there is a guideline for it.

It's ok, it is a rather tricky subject. I am a native speaker and even I can't tell the difference. Only some speakers still distinguish the genders. So "m and f" is really misleading when, at least to me, all nouns are either "n" or "m and f" (my own speech has no distinct masculine or feminine gender).
