Coined in the 20th century, from an unknown compound. Various theories exist:
- From Old Tupi toryba (“happiness”) + Old Tupi etama (“land”)[1]
- From Latin tori + Old Tupi etama (“land”);[2]
- From Torres + Old Tupi etama (“land”);[3]
- From Old Tupi itá (“stone”) + Old Tupi etama (“land”).[3]
