English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Tor is the name of a fake cow contraption for breeding bulls, so named because of its apparence like a gate, which is of little use to Ochsen, who cannot breed. Otherwise analogous to stubborn animals.

Phrase[edit]

wie ein Ochse vor dem Tor

  1. (simile, humorous, of inaction) unable, not motivated, helpless
