If you're looking for ways to help the project[edit]
Any language[edit]
- Strengthen connections between entries: adding derived terms, related terms, and alternative forms, and making sure all these entries link to each other. For example, "typically" should link to "typical" in its etymology, and "typical" should link to "typically" in its derived terms. (If you're interested in making pages/categories to help with this, let me know.)
- Add references to entries: this gives additional resources to users, and it lends this project legitimacy. See Category:Reference templates by language.
English[edit]
If you're a native English speaker, there is a lot of entry maintenance you can do. Explore the main categories, Category:Requests concerning English and Category:English entry maintenance, or take a look at the following list. Feel free to ask me for formatting help, and check out Wiktionary:Entry layout.
- Category:Requests for expansion of etymologies in English entries: a lot of these are minerals whose etymology you can find on the link to webmineral.com.
- Category:Requests for quotations in English: many of these are looking for quotes by specific authors, but it's typically fine to use a quote by another author.
- There's a tool that can help a lot with this using Google Books, and you can activate it by going to Special:Preferences, the Gadgets tab, and enabling "Quiet Quentin" in the bottom section. The gadget appears by the search bar.
- You can also use quotes from a publication by filling out the parameters at
{{quote-journal}}
.
- Category:Requests for example sentences in English: an easy way to help out, just make sure you use the word in such a way that demonstrates its meaning.
- Wiktionary:Todo: a big list of categories linking to formatting and cleanup requests. Some pages are outdated, but if you post in the Wiktionary:Grease Pit, someone will probably help you update them.
- User:DTLHS/cleanup: even more lists!
Other languages[edit]
The main categories are Category:Requests by language and Category:Entry maintenance by language. Even with a basic level, you can do the following:
- Add example sentences and quotations.
- Category:Requests for verification by language is basically a higher priority request for quotation. And if the term doesn't seem to exist, mention it. If it's rare, label it.
- Add any red links at Category:Requested entries.
For advanced or native speakers (or lower level speakers of less common languages):
- Category:Requests for review of translations by language: some of these are very straightforward and just the result of splitting a definition into two.
