Hi there. I always thought that channel coal was the same as jet. SemperBlotto 14:37, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I was given some unusual looking coal recently, and overnight I recalled reading about cannel coal as the first commercial coal because it was found at the surface and could be "mined" with a draft animal and iron plow, because it would split and break like shale. I heat with coal, and since this is the first fire of the season, I burned some of the unusual coal, and it in fact split and stratified (like shale) while burning and produced a yellow flame (all my soft and hard coals burn with a blue flame) so I observed and noted the smoke level and smell.
