Definition from Wiktionary, the free dictionary
Jump to: navigation, search

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary!

If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.

First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'. You can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using [[w:pagename]], {{pedia}}, or {{wikipedia}}.

Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Don't go looking for a Village pump – we have a Beer parlour. Note that while Wikipedia likes redirects, Wiktionary deletes most redirects, (especially spelling variations) in favor of short entries. Please do not copy entries here from Wikipedia if they are in w:CAT:MtW, they are moved by bot, and will appear presently in the Transwiki: namespace.

Special note to experienced Wikipedia users:
This is not Wikipedia. The policies here are quite different from Wikipedia, and some of the differences may surprise you. Please remember that you are a Wiktionary newbie. There are very distinct policy differences here, the rules are much sharper in terms of dictionary entries, though less well defined in non-dictionary matters. In particular, being "bold" with policy pages (which usually have much greater acceptance than indicated) is highly discouraged. If you think there's a way policy can really be improved, that'll generally need an extended WT:BP discussion and a one-month (or longer) WT:VOTE. There have been people who came here from being experienced Wikipedians and tried to run things in the past, and ultimately ended up being blocked, and this causes (perhaps unfair) subconscious assumptions about your conduct here.

You should also note that Wiktionary has very different user-space policies from Wikipedia, we are here to build a dictionary and so the user-page must help with that goal. In particular we have voted to explicitly ban all userboxes with the exception of {{Babel}}; please do not create or use them.

We hope you enjoy editing Wiktionary and being a Wiktionarian.

Before trying to run any bot on English Wiktionary, please read and abide by our bot policy, which is different from English Wikipedia's.—msh210 18:21, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

We add interwikis in alphabetical order by language code. Please fix this page!—msh210 19:44, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

You know the way to submit correct changes to the pywikipedia code. Carsrac 07:34, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
No, but it doesn't matter. Your use of that code on that page is what's at issue, not the code itself. In any event, I've fixed the page myself.—msh210 15:02, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
