If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.

First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'.

Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Don't go looking for a Village pump – we have a Beer parlour. Note that while Wikipedia likes redirects, Wiktionary deletes most redirects, (especially spelling variations) in favor of short entries. Please do not copy entries here from Wikipedia if they are in w:CAT:MtW; request the full history import instead, at WT:ID.

Finally, you can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using [[w:pagename]], {{wikipedia}}, or {{wikipediapar|pagename}}. Please do not create redirects to Wikipedia pages, though. They don't work.

Arabic vowels[edit]

Please note that you cannot use double vowel points in Arabic here in Wiktionary. The reason is a technical problem with the wiki software concerning normalization. When you type two Arabic vowel points, such as shadda fatha and then save it, the wiki software changes it to fatha shadda, which is in the wrong order. Some fonts are able to display both orders correct, with the fatha above the shadda, but most fonts, at least those used in the West, can only handle shadda fatha correctly, and the opposite order either puts the fatha in the middle of the shadda like a crossthough, or it puts the fatha below the shadda, which looks like shadda kasra. The developers have been aware of this problem for over a year but have not been able to correct it. For this reason, you can put shadda or fatha/kasra/dhamma, but not both. The same applies to all combinations of Arabic pointing, and they will be improperly reversed if you put them.

This looks like a font bug rather than a Mediawiki bug. So using these combinations will not give wrong strings, but they might be poorly rendered depending on what fonts and font shaper the user has. --Moyogo 12:27, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, it is not a font bug. It does not matter what font you use, with one exception. There are a small number of fonts (such as "Arabic Typesetting", which I have) which have been designed to display compound vowels correctly regardless of which way they are typed. Very few fonts are made that way, and the reason is that shadda ALWAYS precedes fatha, kasra, dhamma. The only reason a small number of fonts are designed to allow either order is to avoid problems due to typos. —Stephen 22:41, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called MK. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name MK~enwiktionary that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
