AHD is not the arbiter of the English language. Actual usage is. Before adding a usage note of this kind, it would be good to take the trouble to check a variety of current sources or, better, actual usage. Usage in edited works reflects the reaction of users to prescriptive recommendations and writers' and editors' beliefs about usage. Google Books, News, Scholar, and Groups provide different views.
