Munsee IPA

[edit]

Hi, Quantum. I see you created {{umu-IPA}}, but what's your source for Munsee IPA qualities? There are several glaring problems I see, like the lack of consideration for diphthongs, and the expression of /a/ in various environments. --{{victar|talk}} 07:59, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I am using the THE HISTORICAL PHONOLOGY OF MUNSEE (IVES GODDARD) as the source (https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/1264746.pdf?refreqid=excelsior%3Aceaf87d0f0df7dc6d0997412f8174586&ab_segments=&origin=&initiator=&acceptTC=1).
I am currently working on modifying the module so that it works for all regular words, including features such as pre-nasalization, labialization, and expression of vowels in various environments as you have stated. I am not familiar with diphthongs in the language except in borrowings.
I would love to discuss any specific concerns you have with the module and its reflection of the phonological properties of the language. Lua is unfamiliar to me so I am working within the confines of my programming knowledge. Quantum10000 (talk) 14:45, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Since, as you're aware, your module is outputting incorrect pronunciations, it shouldn't be used on live entries. As for diphthongs, <uy>, for example, is realized as /ɨi̯ ~ ɪi̯/, and <uw> as /ʉu̯ ~ ʊi̯/. --{{victar|talk}} 22:43, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
What is your source for this? The closest I see is the following line from the aforementioned article:
2.1. /ə/ is a mid central vowel, varying toward [i] before /y/, toward [u] before /w/ (and, to a generally lesser extent, before other labials), and toward [ʌ] after /x/.
Since y is said to be a semivowel it would be scribed as [j], and thus it seems to me that <uy> would be realized as [ij]. If you have a source for the ʉ ~ ʊ vowels I'd be happy to add this information. Quantum10000 (talk) 01:05, 26 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
You're misreading the paper. That line reads, “varying toward [ɪ] before /y/, toward [ʊ] before /w/”. --{{victar|talk}} 01:55, 26 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
