actual[edit]

I've seen no evidence for actual having a variant /ˈaktjʊəl/ in current RP; all the modern dictionaries I've looked at give pronunciations like /ˈaktʃʊəl/, /ˈaktʃəl/, etc. Notably, when the OED was written in 1884, it gave a pronunciation equivalent to /ˈæktjuːəl/; this was kept in the 2nd edition (1989). However, with the 3rd edition (the entry was written in 2010), such a pronunciation is no longer given except as a historical footnote ("N.E.D. (1884) [i.e. the first edition of the OED] gives the pronunciation as (æ·ktiuăl) /ˈæktjuːəl/"), probably since it's no longer current.

If Wiktionary is to give such a pronunciation, it should probably be listed as (dated, Received Pronunciation) or something similar. --Hazarasp (talk) 04:25, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
