Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse *Vaniflir, originally a fjord name. First part from *vaðr, *vannr (dark, colourless; pale) and may refer to the occurrence of olivine in the area. Last part possibly from *viflir (low, wet terrain). Another, unlikely, suggestion is *heflir.
