From Middle High German vassang, vaschanc, vastschang (serving of drinks during fasting (i.e. Lent)), from vaste (fasting) + schanc (serving of drinks), reinterpreted as vastganc (vaste + ganc (procession)). Cognate with Austrian and Bavarian German Fasching.
