Rationale[edit]

My guess is this: make sure the link takes the reader to the section for the specific language they were interested in rather than the top of the page. Whether this is worth the clutter is what is at stake. --Dan Polansky (talk) 07:02, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For non-Latin-script languages this is particularly important as it ensures that the translit is properly displayed. Possibly the vote should be split into English, non-English Latin-script languages and non-Latin-script languages. Benwing2 (talk) 07:06, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As it stands, I intend to suport the vote in all languages. I agree with Dan Polansky's guessed rationale. IMHO, I don't think the template qualifies as clutter, I find the "* {{l|en|" and "}}" easy to ignore when I'm reading synonyms in the code. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 14:11, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think it should be split into at least English and non-English languages (maybe the vote should simply be for non-English languages, now that {{def}} exists.) Andrew Sheedy (talk) 19:07, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Benwing2: I added three sections for non-Latin-script languages. Please check whether it works for you. --Dan Polansky (talk) 13:13, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Dan Polansky My instinct is actually to support for non-English languages in general and oppose for English, which suggests maybe there should be a section for this as well; but I feel most strongly about this for non-Latin-script languages. Note that awhile ago I actually wrote and ran a bot to do this substitution specifically for Russian, and later for a number of other non-Latin-script languages; it was probably more careful than CodeCat's bot (e.g. it only substituted for specific languages, only in lines beginning with a *, only if the link contained non-Latin characters in the character set appropriate to the language and didn't contain non-Latin characters in any other character set, etc.). @Benwing2: I added "For languages other than English" to the vote. --Dan Polansky (talk) 13:38, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Dan Polansky Thanks! Benwing2 (talk) 13:57, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure why a vote is needed. This has already been done. —CodeCat 00:15, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It hasn't been done for English and it's not clear it needs to be. Benwing2 (talk) 23:15, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
