From a Vulgar Latin root *astectare, from an alteration of Latin adspectāre, an alternative form of aspectāre, present active infinitive of aspectō. Compare Aromanian ashteptu, ashtiptari, Italian aspettare, Sardinian aisetare, Sicilian astittari.
