Etymology[edit]

Abkhasia +‎ -isk, from the place name Abkhasia ("Abkhazia") and the suffix -isk. First part from Russian Абха́зия (Abxázija, Abkhazia), from Georgian აფხაზეთი (apxazeti, Abkhazia), from აფხაზი (apxazi, Abkhaz person) +‎ -ეთი (-eti, location suffix), first suffix from Old Georgian [Term?], from earlier *აბაზხ-ი (*abazx-i) borrowed from Mingrelian *აუ̂აზხ-ი (*aûazx-i), which most probably goes back to Hellenic. Last part from Old Norse -iskr, from Proto-Germanic *-iskaz, from Proto-Indo-European *-iskos.
