From Ancient Greek ἄκριτος (ákritos, doubtful, indistinguishable) +‎ -arch.

acritarch (plural acritarches)

  1. (paleontology, palynology) Any small, non-acid-soluble (i.e. non-carbonate, non-siliceous) organic fossil that cannot be classified.
