From Proto-Finno-Ugric *ade- (to sleep) + -szik (verb-forming suffix).

Usage notes

Its transitive forms are possible only in certain phrases (see those with alussza among the Expressions below) as well as with certain verbal prefixes: kialussza magát (’get enough sleep’), elalussza … (’have some body part gone to sleep’, i.e. stiff from the wrong position), végigalussza …, átalussza … (’sleep through the night’, ’sleep through the new year’) etc..
