Norwegian Bokmål[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From French amunition a misunderstanding of Middle French la munition, "the war supplies", instead taking it as l'amunition and thus mistakenly rendering the dictionary form as amunition. The mistake was later corrected in Modern French but survived in English and other languages. Munition is from Latin munitio, "fortress", nominative of munitionem, "fortification, fortress", from munire, "to fortify, entrench".

Noun[edit]

ammunisjon (singular definite ammunisjonen)

  1. ammunition (articles used in charging firearms and ordnance of all kinds)
Heldigvis var geværet ladd med løs ammunisjon.
Fortunately, the gun was loaded with blank rounds. (literally: "fortunately, the gun was loaded with loose ammunition")
Skandalen i partiet gav motstanderne god ammunisjon under valgkampen.
The party scandal proved to be good ammunition for the opponents during the election campaign. (literally: "the scandal in the party gave the opponents good ammunition during the election campaign")
