From mut or from Vulgar Latin ammutiō, ammutīre, with the Aromanian suffix -ãscu, or from Latin obmūtēscō. Alternatively from the variant form mutsãscu. Compare Romanian amuți, amuțesc, Italian ammutire, ammutisco.
