Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *asilos. Cognate with Old Prussian asilis (donkey), Proto-Slavic *osьlъ (donkey). Ultimately a borrowing from Proto-Germanic *asiluz, itself borrowed from Latin asellus.
