Albanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

A formation from birë, with similar -r- > -rr- change as in bërryl[1]. Related to Greek βράγος ‎(vrágos, shallows). Jokl argues for a substrate origin, identifying the word with the ancient Balkan stem bar- in river names. [2]

Noun[edit]

  1. muddy pool, pond, swamp
