Etymology
From Middle High German vewen, from Old High German fowen, fewen, from Proto-Germanic *fawjaną (“to sift”), from Proto-Indo-European *powH-éye-ti (“to purify, cleanse”), from the root *pewH- (“to be clean, pure”). Closely related to Sanskrit पवयति (pavayati, “to purify, cleanse”), and more distantly to Welsh ir (“raw, fresh”), Latin pūrus (“clear, clean, pure”), Persian پاک (pâk, “clean, pure”).
