From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (pʾk' /pāk/, clean, pure, holy). From Proto-Indo-European *pewH- (to cleanse, purify). Cognate with Sanskrit पावक (pāvaka, pure, clean, clear), Latin purus.
