From French baccalauréat or its source, (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Medieval Latin baccalaureatus, from baccalaureus, an alteration of baccalarius (“young man aspiring to knighthood”) to resemble bacca lauri (“laurel berry”) (the ancient symbol of victory). Compare bachelor.
