Etymology

From Medieval Latin *batāre (to gape), probably of imitative origin. The form may have been influenced by Old High German beiton (to bite) (compare Gothic 𐌱𐌴𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (beitan). Cognate with French bayer.
