From Middle High German welisc, from Old High German walask, from Proto-West Germanic *walhisk, from Proto-Germanic *walhiskaz (foreign, non-Germanic (i.e. Celtic, Roman)). Cognate with German welsch (pertaining to the Romance-speaking areas and population of Switzerland), English Welsh (pertaining to Wales).
