baltă
Romanian
Etymology
It is generally agreed to be from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *bʰelH- (“to gleam”), but there is disagreement whether the word is one of the earliest Romanian loans from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Slavic *bolto (“swamp”), or whether it is a substratum word. Compare Albanian baltë (“mud”), Aromanian baltã and Greek βάλτος (váltos, “swamp”).
