Etymology

From Bareja +‎ -izm, named after Stanisław Bareja, a Polish filmmaker best known for comedy films satirizing the absurdities of communist Poland. Originally coined as a pejorative term (sense #2) by Kazimierz Kutz in the 1960s in criticisms of Bareja's works.

     Czy jest coś z udziałem urzędników, czego w tym mieście nie da się spieprzyć? Poraża mnie ten brak wyobraźni i brak odpowiedzialności. Takie drobne epizodziki oczywiście z powodu niskiej szkodliwości ujdą urzędniczkom płazem, ale rosnący poziom bylejakości i bareizmu jest niepojęty. Przeciągające się remonty, brak pomiędzy nimi synchronizacji, brak szacunku dla mieszkańców, nieprzewidywalność i arogancja. Co z tą mentalnością zrobić?

     Is there something in this city that a group of bureaucrats can't screw up? This lack of imagination and responsibility shocks me. And of course because these minor little episodes aren't very harmful, the bureaucrats will get off scott-free, but the growing level of mediocrity and absurdity is incomprehensibly. The drawn-out remodelings, the lack of synchronization between them, the lack of respect for residents of the area, the unpredictability and arrogance. What can we do about this mentality?

     I don't know where people get these ideas. This is bureaucratic absurdity at its finest :) I can already see that the passengers are coming to realize this and the media is cracking up:)

     Tak, proszę państwa, lokatorka przez dwa lata nie dostanie nowego pilota, niech sobie nie myśli. Podobno taki rygor widniał nawet na umowie, jaką podpisała ze spółdzielnią. Nawet jeśli tego bareizmu nie dostrzegła, to sam fakt, że ktoś w tej spółdzielni coś takiego wymyślił i włożył do umowy, dowodzi, że panuje tam wciąż sowieckie podejście do obywatela.

     Yes, please people, the tenant will not get a new remote control for two years, please do not think otherwise. Apparently such a restriction had been present in the agreement that she signed with the co-op. Even if this bureaucratic absurdity hadn't come to her attention, then the very fact that someone in this co-op thought this up and added it to the agreement proves that the old Soviet ways for dealing with citizens still rule there.

     Zapis w ustawie o bibliotekach o możliwości łączenia ich z innymi instytucjami kultury to dobry przykład bareizmu. Szkoda tylko, że tak opłakanego dla bibliotek w skutkach (jeśli gdzieś jest inaczej – i biblioteka na połączeniu zyskała – proszę dać znać).

     The record in the statute concerning libraries and the possibility of combining them with other culturual institutions is a good example of bureaucratic absurdity. It's just a shame that it's such a miserable one for libraries (if it's different somewhere else - and more libraries are combined, please let me know).

     The transmissions are not the only bureaucratic absurdity at these championships. In the first phase we are playing in the smallest possible assembly hall, and there are more fans for the foreign matches than for the Polish ones!
