Etymology

The word was introduced into biology by botanist Jan Svatopluk Presl in 1846.[1], who borrowed it either from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Polish bedła, bedłka or from some Czech dialect.[2] Comes from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Slavic *bъdla or *bъdlo.[2]
