Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English bischaden, bischadewen, bischadowen, equivalent to be- +‎ shade and/or be- +‎ shadow. Cognate with Saterland Frisian beskaadje (to shadow), Dutch beschaduwen (to shade, shadow), German beschatten (to shadow).
