From Old French blou, bleve "pallid, wan, discoloured, blue", from Frankish *blāo, blāw, from Proto-Germanic *blēwaz (blue, yellowish-gray), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰl(e)h₁uos, *bʰlewas (light-coloured, blond, yellow), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (to shine). Compare the doublet blu (blue).
