From Proto-Germanic *beudaną, akin to Old Saxon biodan, Old English bēodan, Old Norse bjóða, Gothic *𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (*biudan). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewdʰ- (“to wake, rise up”).
