Either from the verb blestema or from a Vulgar Latin root *blastemium, from blasphemium, from Ecclesiastical Latin blasphemia. Compare Italian bestemmia, Old French blastenge, Old Provençal blastenh. Cf. also blasfemie, a possible doublet.
