From Vulgar Latin *blastēmāre, present active infinitive of *blastēmō, from Ecclesiastical Latin, Late Latin blasphēmō, from Ancient Greek βλασφημέω (blasphēméō). Compare Italian bestemmiare, Romanian blestema, Romansch blastemmar, blasfemar, blastmer, Spanish lastimar.
