From Middle Welsh blwyddyn, from Old Welsh bloidin, from Proto-Celtic *blēdanī (year) (whence Cornish bledhen, Breton blizenn, Old Irish blíadain). Compare also Cornish bloth, Breton bloaz; Old Breton blened, Welsh blynedd.
