From Proto-Micronesian *pʷoŋi, from Proto-Oceanic *boŋi, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *bəʀŋi. Cognate with Sundanese ᮝᮨᮍᮤ (wengi), Kapampangan bengi, Gilbertese bong.
