Somali[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly related to Proto-Semitic *malk- (king), undergoing the following metathesis and sound shifts: *malk- > *makl- > *bokol- > *boqor-. The sound shift from /m/ to /b/ can be observed in Somali words such as biyo (water) from Proto-Afroasiatic *maʔ-.
