From Old Norse brúðgumi, from brúðr (bride) (modern Icelandic brúður) + gumi (man) (modern Icelandic gumi), or from Proto-Germanic *brūdigumô. Compare Faroese brúðgómur, Norwegian and Danish brudgom, Swedish brudgum, English bridegroom, German Bräutigam.
