[edit]Unknown. Possibly a substratum word, perhaps from a Dacian *bengas, *bongas or *bungas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂ǵnos, with a suffix added later, akin to Albanian bung. Alternatively, a borrowing from this Albanian word.
