Inherited from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *buliʀ ((entire) stalk of bananas; ear of grain) with elision of /l/. Compare Ilocano bulig, Cebuano bulig, Maranao olig, Malay bulir, and Javanese ꦮꦸꦭꦶ (wuli).
