căpățână
Romanian
Alternative forms
- căpățînă (old orthography)
Etymology
Probably from Vulgar Latin *capitina, ultimately from Latin caput (“head”), possibly formed through analogy with morticina. Compare Aromanian cãpitsãnã. Other possibilities may include an internal derivation from cap, or from a căpăț (perhaps from Latin capitium) with the suffix -ână. Compare Spanish cabeza, Portuguese cabeça.
