Etymology 1
Borrowed from Arabic قَنْجَة (qanja), shortened from Ottoman Turkish قانجهباش (kancabaş, “ship of a curved prow”) from قانجه (kanca, “hook”) + باش (baş, “prow”), so called because of its prow being curved like a hook.
