Borrowed from Ancient Greek καθετήρ (kathetḗr, surgical instrument for emptying the bladder), from καθίημι (kathíēmi, to descend, let down) + -τήρ (-tḗr, suffix forming masculine nouns from verbs) (from Proto-Indo-European *-tḗr (suffix forming agent nouns from verbs, denoting someone or something whose role or purpose it is to perform the verb's action)).
