[edit]Inherited from Vulgar Latin *cibrum, from Latin crībrum (through dissimilation). Compare Aromanian tsir; compare also the different dissimilation in French crible and Portuguese crivo.
Alternatively from Latin cilibrum, an earlier or archaic form of cribrum (cf. Sardinian chilibru, chiliru), found in Dioscorides' writings.[1]
