From Proto/Common Romanian, from South Slavic (compare Serbo-Croatian ко̏жа/kȍža, Bulgarian ко́жа (kóža)); cf. also Megleno-Romanian and Romanian coajă. Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *koža.
