Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Probably a derivative of the expressive root coc (cf. cucă (peak, top), cucuia (rise, climb)). Less likely etymologies proposed include a link with cocoș, or a derivative of Latin cucutium, or a Vulgar Latin root *concaptiāre.
