Usage notes
[edit]- The two nouns that form this term are in a genitive construction, with the first noun (coesyn) being definite by default. Determiners precede the second second noun (ymennydd). When the second noun is indefinite or its definiteness can be inferred from a possessive pronoun or a genitive relationship to another noun, the definite article is dropped as is usual in Welsh:
- Coesyn ymennydd yw hwn, nid madarch. ― This is a brain stem, not a mushroom's. (literally, “This is the stem of a brain, not of a mushroom.”)
- coesyn ei hymennydd ― her brain stem (literally, “the stem of her brain”)
- Dyma goesyn ymennydd llo, dafad yw hwn, ac un Siân drws nesa sy draw fanna. ― This is a calf's brain stem, this is a sheep's, and Siân next door's is over there. (literally, “This is the stem of the brain of a calf, this is of a sheep, and the one of Siân next door is over there.”)
